Winnall Primary School

Latest guidance on coronavirus from the Headteacher - 13th March 2020

Dear Parents/ Carers

Coronavirus – Covid-19

There has been a lot of recent speculation around this virus and the impact it will have on the Winnall Primary School community.

At present, we have no confirmed cases of Covid-19 (Coronavirus) in school. Yesterday, the Prime Minster announced that schools would stay open at present. We receive regular updates from Hampshire County Council and the Department of Education, and if this advice changes we will inform you as soon as possible.

In the mean time we have taken these precautions:

  • Children have been taught how to wash their hands more effectively and this is being encouraged as much as is possible.
  • Children are being encouraged not to cough over each other and to use and dispose of tissues effectively
  • The lunchtime staff are ensuring that tables and chairs are cleaned both before and after meals
  • We have a member of our cleaning team cleaning during the day

I am aware that there is a lot of speculation and false information on the internet, particularly on social media sites. Any information regarding Winnall Primary will come directly from us. I understand that many adults are concerned about Covid-19 and some of these concerns are being inadvertently passed on to children. We will endeavour to answer questions as honestly and appropriately as we can, but we are also refraining from discussing our own worries around the children.

In the event that we do need to close, this time will not be regarded as an extension of the Easter holidays, and work will be made available to children. This will mostly be made available through our school website in the “Class Pages” section. I have also asked teachers to start preparing work packs that could be sent home where appropriate.

Some of you are concerned as to whether you need to self-isolate. Please refer to the NHS website at for the most up-to-date information on whether you need to do this. Additional advice is available from the NHS 111 service on

If you and your family decide to self-isolate, please contact us by phone to advise us of the situation. We will be able to email work to pupils in this instance.

In order to help us manage all of this, can you please ensure that we have up to date email addresses for you all. Not only are we emailing out this letter today, but also sending home a paper copy. If you do not receive an email copy, can you please contact the school urgently to ensure we have the right contact details for you.

In the meantime, it is business as usual at Winnall Primary School!

Thank you for you continued support

Alison Rhodes
