What does a good citizen look like at the end of...

 What does a good citizen look like by the end of Year R?

  •  By the end of the ‘Me and My Relationships’ unit, children will be able to talk about similarities and differences, name special people in their lives, describe different feelings and identify who can help them when they feel worried, sad or scared.
  • By the end of the ‘Valuing Differences' unit, children will be able to recognise that we have things in common with others, celebrate what makes each person unique, know the importance of showing care and kindness towards others and demonstrate skills in building friendships and cooperation.
  • By the end of the ‘Keeping Safe’ unit, children will be able to talk about how to keep their bodies healthy and safe, know how to stay safe in their home, classroom, outside and online and name adults who can keep them safe
  • By the end of the ‘Rights and Respect’ unit, children will be able to understand how they can make a difference, identify how they can care for their home, school and special people and talk about how they can make an impact on the natural world.
  • By the end of the ‘Being My Best’ unit, children will be able to feel resilient and confident in their learning, discuss different types of feelings and understand how healthy choices can keep us well.
  • By the end of the ‘Growing and Changing’ unit, children will be able to understand changes in nature and humans, using the correct names for different parts of the body and stages in childhood and know how to keep themselves safe.

 

 What does a good citizen look like by the end of Year 1?

  • By the end of the ‘Me and My Relationships’ unit, children will be able to recognise and name different feelings, understand how their actions affect others, and begin to build positive friendships.
  • By the end of the ‘Valuing Differences’ unit, children will be able to understand that people are different in many ways and show kindness and respect to others.
  • By the end of the ‘Keeping Safe’ unit, children will be able to recognise safe and unsafe situations and know who they can talk to if they need help.
  • By the end of the ‘Rights and Respect’ unit, children will be able to understand simple rules, help care for their classroom and environment, and begin to understand fairness.
  • By the end of the ‘Being My Best’ unit, children will be able to understand simple ways to keep their bodies healthy, including exercise, healthy eating and hygiene.
  • By the end of the ‘Growing and Changing’ unit, children will be able to recognise how people grow and change, identify some body parts and their basic functions, and understand the importance of trusted adults.

 

What does a good citizen look like by the end of Year 2?
  • By the end of the ‘Me and My Relationships’ unit, children will be able to explain how to be a good friend, work cooperatively with others, and understand how their actions affect people around them.
  • By the end of the ‘Valuing Differences’ unit, children will be able to recognise and respect differences between people and understand how listening helps them understand different points of view.
  • By the end of the ‘Keeping Safe’ unit, children will be able to understand how to keep themselves safe in different situations and know who they can ask for help.
  • By the end of the ‘Rights and Respect’ unit, children will be able to show respect for others, understand their responsibilities in school, and make fair choices.
  • By the end of the ‘Being My Best’ unit, children will be able to set simple goals, try their best, and understand how healthy habits support their wellbeing.
  • By the end of the ‘Growing and Changing’ unit, children will be able to describe how they have grown and changed and understand that change is a normal part of life.

 

What does a good citizen look like by the end of Year 3?

  • By the end of the ‘Me and My Relationships’ unit, children will be able to understand different relationships, show how to be a good friend, talk about their feelings, and keep themselves safe.
  • By the end of the ‘Valuing Differences’ unit, children will be able to understand that everyone is different, treat others with respect, and know what to do if they see or experience bullying.
  • By the end of the ‘Keeping Safe unit’, children will be able to identify unsafe situations, know how to keep themselves safe, and understand who they can ask for help.
  • By the end of the ‘Rights and Respect unit’, children will be able to understand their rights and responsibilities, treat others and the environment with respect, and make fair choices.
  • By the end of the ‘Being my Best unit’, children will be able to understand how to keep their bodies and minds healthy, make good choices, and try their best.
  • By the end of the ‘Growing and Changing unit’, children will be able to understand how people grow and change, talk about their feelings, and know where to get help if they are worried.

 

What does a good citizen look like by the end of year 4?

  • By the end of the ‘Me and My Relationships’ unit year 4 pupils will be able to discuss healthy and unhealthy relationships. They will be able to discuss different feelings and learn strategies to respond to bullying.
  • By the end of the ‘Valuing Differences’ unit year 4 pupils will be able to understand negotiation and compromise. They will be able to list the ways people are different to each other and respect these differences. They will understand the different types of relationships you can have with people.
  • By the end of the ‘Keeping Safe unit’ year 4 pupils will be able to define the terms danger, risk and hazard. They will understand that medicines are drugs and the safe ways to take them.
  • By the end of the ‘Rights and Respect’ unit year 4 pupils will be able to explain how different people in school and the community help them stay healthy. They will understand that humans have rights and responsibilities. They will understand the word influence and form their own opinions.
  • By the end of the ‘Being my Best’ unit year 4 pupils will be able to identify ways in which people are unique. In this unit they will cover some basic first aid skills.
  • By the end of the ‘Growing and Changing’ unit year 4 pupils will be able to understand the onsets of puberty and how this will impact physically and emotionally on them. They will know the key facts of the menstrual cycle. They will learn the differences between a secret and a surprise. Finally, they will learn about the definition of marriage.

 

What does a good citizen look like by the end of year 5?

  • Pupils will be able to recognise and manage a range of emotions, build and maintain healthy friendships, understand respectful and safe relationships (including online), and know how to seek help or support when needed.
  • By the end of the ‘Valuing Difference’ unit, Year 5 pupils will be able to recognise and respect diversity, challenge stereotypes and discrimination, understand the importance of equality and inclusion, and show empathy and respect towards others in their community and wider society.
  • Pupils will be able to identify risks and unsafe situations (including online and in the real world), make informed and responsible choices to keep themselves and others safe, understand how to manage peer pressure, and know where and how to get help or advice.
  • By the end of the ‘Rights and Respect’ unit, Year 5 pupils will be able to understand their rights and responsibilities, recognise how their actions affect others, show respect for people, property and the environment, and contribute positively to their school and wider community.
  • Pupils will be able to understand the physical and emotional changes of puberty, recognise how feelings may change as they grow, develop strategies for managing these changes, and know how and where to seek support or reliable information.
  • By the end of the "Me and My Relationships" unit, children will be able to work together collaboratively, recognise and manage challenges that can arise in friendships (including peer pressure), and explain what makes a committed, equal and respectful relationship, recognising what is appropriate and inappropriate behaviour.

 

What does a good citizen look like by the end of Year 6?

  • By the end of the "Valuing Differences" unit, children will be able to understand that bullying often comes from a lack of tolerance, show respect for differences, and feel confident challenging gender stereotypes.
  • By the end of the "Keeping Safe" unit, children will be able to understand how online behaviour affects others, recognise the risks of sharing images online, understand the effects and risks of legal and illegal drugs, including alcohol, and talk about addiction.
  • By the end of the "Rights and Respect" unit, children will be able to explain the difference between fact and opinion, recognise bias, understand how money can be managed (including the benefits of saving), live sustainably, and describe key features of democracy.
  • By the end of the "Being My Best" unit, children will be able to set personal goals, recognise risks to their wellbeing and how to reduce them, and understand basic first aid.
  • By the end of the "Growing and Changing" unit, children will be able to talk about qualities that are not just physical, understand how media can manipulate images and affect self-esteem, and explain the physical and emotional changes that happen during puberty.
