What does a Winnall Geographer look like by the end of Year 1?

  • Recognise local features
  • Draw simple maps of school grounds
  • Begin to understand location of UK
  • Observe weather patterns in the UK
  • Identify physical and human features
  • Start using directional language

 

What does a Winnall Geographer look like by the end of Year 2?

  • Able to use and understand maps
  • Understand North, South, East and West
  • Have an expanding locational knowledge
  • Understand basic subject specific vocabulary relating to humans and physical geography
  • Able to compare the human and physical geography of small area – UK and non-European

 

What does a Winnall Geographer look like by the end of Year 3?

  • To know the names of some counties in the UK (local to Winnall Primary School).
  • To know the names of some cities in the UK (local to Winnall Primary School).
  • To know the name of the county that they live in and their closest city.
  • Identify key physical and human characteristics of counties, cities, and/or geographical regions in the UK.
  • To begin to name the twelve geographical regions of the UK.
  • Explaining what measures humans have taken in order to adapt to survive in cold places.
  • Describe how a locality has changed over time, giving examples of both physical and human features.

 

What does a Winnall Geographer look like by the end of Year 4?

  • Be able to locate some counties in the UK (local to Winnall Primary School).
  • Be able to locate some cities in the UK (local to Winnall Primary School).
  • Begin to locate the twelve geographical regions of the UK.
  • To know the main types of land use.
  • To know some types of settlement.
  • Identify how topographical features studied have changed over time using examples.
  • Describing and explaining how people who live in a contrasting physical area may have different lives to people in the UK.

 

What does a Winnall Geographer look like by the end of Year 5?

  • Understand the purpose of fieldwork
  • Have a greater appreciation of the world around them
  • Articulate what makes UK/Winnall/Hampshire distinct geographical areas
  • Understand what geography actually is – not just countries and atlases
  • Use foundational geography knowledge to undertake meaningful research
  • Talk about compelling learning experiences (local trips) with enthusiasm
  • Secure understanding of key geographical vocabulary/terminology
  • Practical skills

 

What does a Winnall Geographer look like by the end of Year 6?

  • Have a greater appreciation of the changing nature of Winnall and the wider world around them.
  • Understand that the UK is a distinct geographical area in relation to the effects of climate change and energy use.
  • To know how climate change and other factors drive population change.
  • To know how the physical geography of an area impacts the ability to use renewable sources of energy and why non-renewable sources are still being used.
  • To be able to carry out planned and purposeful field work, using skills developed during their time spent at Winnall.
  • Talk about compelling learning experiences, including local visits and field work enquiries, with enthusiasm.
